Upon application acceptance by the department faculty, I was chosen along with two other engineering education doctoral students to serve as a student ambassador for the department. My responsibilities included planning and hosting an orientation for the incoming doctoral cohort at the beginning of each academic year. Student ambassadors would also meet with the Engineering Education Assistant Department Head for Graduate Programs and the Engineering Education Graduate Coordinator every other week to discuss departmental needs, as well as to plan for recruiting opportunities for the department. This included open house events for prospective students, representing the department in regional conferences, and representing the department in regional university visits. This was a really great opportunity to meet other people outside of my home department who are also interested in engineering education research.
