THEMES

Cooking: Cooking and Food is the heart and soul of this novel. Food is what brings this family together and his love for cooking is what drives him from working in his family restaurant in the Alps to opening his own restaurant in Paris, France. A large component of how Hassan has grown in his culinary experience is learning how to balance and combine the original Indian food he grew up with to the French food he is forced to get used to. The best way to grow as a chef is to challenge yourself and that's exactly what he did.

Family: Family is a large priority in this book. Even from the beginning he has been humble and always stuck by and supported his family, no matter what. The Haji family shows their appreciation when Papa says to Hassan "Remember sweet boy, you are a Haji. Always remember. A Haji" This stays with him for the rest of his life, and helped him to not doubt himself. The connection with his family especially living with most of them is something he doesn't let go, and they help him through his hundred foot journey.

Admiration: Hassan has many hero figures in his life. The leading figures he looks up to are Papa, Mama, and Madame Mallory. He is extremely  for these characters as he thanks them for his success and helping him to get to where he needs to be.The lessons he has learned from each of them for the time they were here are priceless were to him. He would not be who he is today without the advice from the ones he admired most. Even though Hassan doesn't realize it, he also inspired Mama, Papa and Mallory.
