CREATIVE PROJECT MADE BY HANNNAH MOFFATT

 Hassan Haji:

Hassan Haji, the main character in the Hundred Foot Journey, started off as a naïve young boy, and was always willing to learn and try new things. He was an extremely respectful boy even to those who he might dislike (Mallory). He is very close with his family as he is throughout his whole life. Unfortunately for the first main part of his life he struggles through many hardships for example the loss of his mother, constant unexpected moves, and later on in the story loosing the three most important people in his life. Through every relationship he experienced it seemed that his true love always went back to one thing ... food. Seems strange but cooking was an escape for Hassan. He is also an extremely forgiving person , sometimes being too nice, but everything always seems to work out in the end. Although his family was doing quite well for a period of time and Papa had more money then he knew what to do with, Hassan always stayed humble. Even the smallest things he is grateful for. His whole life he has always worked hard towards his main goal in life, to be a professional chef and one day open up his own restaurant, and that is exactly what he does. It took an immense amount of work, dedication and patience but he eventually accomplished his goal. His journey through life seemed much longer than one hundred steps but in the end was worth every step he took.

Abbas Haji (Papa)

Papa is the heart and soul of this story. He always tries to make everyone else happy but unfortunately often forgets about himself. He is the man of the house and is always motivated by his own personal achievement/improvement. Although he may seem selfish at times its usually just his lack of judgement. Papa is literally the opposite of elegant and polite, he does whatever he wants to do and doesn't look for anyone's approval. This includes getting his daughter to squeeze the boils out of his back. Papa wears his heart on his sleeve and is surprisingly an endearing individual. Even though Papa is emotionally driven he is also a savvy business man who knows what to do when it comes to cooking good food. Hassan and his Papa are much alike in many ways as they both are quite laid back and always seek for the light at the end of the tunnel. Papa has always been very supportive towards Hassan and his cooking career and never made him believe his dreams could never come true. His warmth and support stay with him even after his death, and his larger than life personality remains with Hassan forever.

Madame Gertrude Mallory

Mallory's character changes a lot throughout the story, but fortunately its for the better. She starts off as a sour and bitter lady who took some friendly competition of having a little Indian restaurant across the street a little too far. After fighting with Papa and Hassan endlessly, she realizes she must change her ways if they are ever all going to get along. Her icy exterior starts to slowly melt and she shows up to apologize for the damage she has done. After realizing Hassan has true talent she demands he come work for her.  She teaches him everything there is to know about a French kitchen. Hassan proved himself while working for Mallory and she takes part in him getting him ahead in the culinary world. She denies ever helping him of course, but she was always pulling strings in the background to get him where he needed to go. When Hassan left for Paris and continues his success she felt very accomplished, she had never had any children so she cared for Hassan more then she ever admitted to. Although the Haji family seemed to be a nightmare in the beginning in the end Hassan and Mallory had a huge impact on each others life and were able to learn a lot from one another.
