PLOT

Hassan Haji is born in West Bombay (Mumbai). One of the few memories he remembers from his childhood was the smell of curry and fish coming from his grandfather restaurant right below him. 

He introduces the story by telling the past of his grandparents. They started a restaurant uptown which was their current source of income in the story, it goes well up until the lower class riots break into Papas restaurant and destroy the place. Also killing Hassan's mother. This was not only the first tragedy occurring but one of the most devastating as Hassan was still just a young boy and it affects him in the future in more ways than he expected. In both positive and negative ways. One things for sure they needed to leave Mumabi and start fresh.

They leave all the good and bad memories behind and end up in England to live with some family there. It seems to be a smart move until Hassan gets into some trouble with friends (drugs) and is caught making out with his trashy cousin. Making another sudden move they are on the move again. Hassan has been having mixed feelings lately and feels very overwhelmed with everything that's been happening. He wonders if things will ever get easier. It seems to him as he has is himself and food. The family takes on some day trips along their travels through Europe, not knowing where they will end up.

They settle down in a small French town in the Alps, and start up a new restaurant, the first ever Indian restaurant in the area. Their new neighbour, a successful business owner and an educated woman by the name of Mallory is a blessing in disguise although since they don't know that yet, she seems like a nightmare to the Haji family. Hassan goes through many events including fighting in the town between Mallory and his Papa, getting pushed into the stove spending nights in the hospital, and almost being forced to work for a woman he very much disliked at the time seemed like a bad nightmare he couldn't wake up from.

Not knowing how much his life would change for the better within the next couple years. While working for Mallory for a number of years he learned everything there is to know about a French kitchen, but then finally started his journey when he accepted his position to work in a kitchen in Paris, France. Climbing the restaurant ladder in Paris (with the secret help from Mallory which she continues to deny) Hassan works at many different places, but now it is time that he opens up his own. With hard work, dedication and a strong business partner "Le Chien Mechant" his new restaurant is bound to be a success. Hassan starts to feel unstoppable and has never been at such a high in his life before. An unexpected tragedy strikes again when Papa, Mallory and his business partner Paul Verdun dies. Hassan falls into a deep depression loosing the 3 most important people in his life.

He feels he has hit rock bottom all over again and has never felt so alone. After nights of no sleep and overthinking Hassan realizes that he needs to not worry about the details and make his life and restaurant a bit simpler. After a total makeover on both of those elements he earns his third star for his restaurant, slowly but surely things start to get better, as they always do. After what seemed as much more than a hundred foot journey Hassan reunites with Margaret, an old "friend". Hassan continues to rise to the top not only for his family name but also for himself.
