Excavation etc in 2013

From August 19, 2013 to September 12 Professor Kinya Inokuchi (Professor of the National University of Saitama) did an excavation. The excavation was done at the southwest of the ruins. In this project 25 people from Kuntur Wasi participated.   The investigation was for a short period but it seems that they were able to get survey results. Please look forward to the announcement of the results of research form professor Inokuchi.

Profoessor Shinya Watanabe of the University of Nanzan worked in the laboratory of museum for classification and analysis of the materials excavated from Palacio de Miraflores in the Cajamarca valley. More than 20 village women worked with him.

Project Monolith

In Kuntur Wasi there is a lot of monoliths and these monoliths can be said tobe symbols of Kuntur Wasi. We have a project to build a building for the monolith. Next year is 20 anniversary of the museum, so we are planning to open the annex to commemorate the 20th anniversary next year.

Project UNESCO

When there is an excavation the archaeologists usually cover the ruins after the work to protect the constructions. But the Japanese Mission had a dream to leave open a part of the excavated area to show the temple so that visitors might have understanding of the shape of the ancient temple at the start of the Andean civilization.

So in 2000 UNESCO and the Japanese archaeologists started a project to protect and restore Kuntur Wasi. The project finished in 2003. They restored the main stairs, walls of the main façade, the plaza on the first terrace, and the central plaza of the Temple U on the top.

"Mobilemuseum"

The University Museum, The University of Tokyo

We have one exhibit which is a part of a project called “Mobilemuseum”. “Mobilemuseum” is like a traveling exhibition. This year we replaced “Manos Cruzadas” to “Altorrelieve de Serpiente”. “Manos Cruzadas” was exhibited last year and this year it has been moved to Huanuco. Instead we exhibit “Altorrelieve de Serpiente” which is a replica of a relief of a snake. This relief was discovered in 1997 and it is still in the place where it was discovered.

The Association  "Keunokai" was born among some Japanese who visited Kuntur Wasi and were impressed by the act of devolution of fruits of study to the place of origin and the administration of the Museum by the local people. The objectives are:

(1)to help its members to have         information about the

     archaeological study about         Peruvian prehistory;

(2)to help the administration and   maintenance of the Kuntur         Wasi Museum;

(3)to strengthen the friendly tie       between the region of

    Cajamarca and Japan.

Its help has contributed a los to widen the museum activities and to increase the number of visitors.
