About us

Kuntur Wasi Museum was inaugurated in 1994, officially recognized by the Ministry of Culture as a museum in which those most precious objects unearthed during the excavations are kept and exhibited in the form of custody. This museum was donated by the Japanese mission to the Cultural Association organized by the people of Kuntur Wasi village who have been in charge of administration, promotion for tourism, education, and human development.

Kuntur Wasi

Kuntur Wasi is located on the hill called "La Copa" near San Pablo, 2300 meters above sea level. Its importance was recognized in 1946 when a group of Dr. Tello's followers discovered more than 5 monoliths and tomb with two gold ornaments. However, there were no excavations until University of Tokyo Archaeological Mission began the systematic research in 1988.

This mission, composed by the Japanese and Peruvian archaeologists under the direction of Yoshio Onuki, has carried out intensive as well as extensive excavations, especially at the summit of the hill, in 12 seasons since 1988. The data acquired through the strictly controlled scientific excavations are valuable for the study of the Formative period of the Andean Civilization.

"Altorrelieve de Serpiente"(Replica)

On 29 September of this year we were able to display a new exhibition in the museum. This new exhibition is part of a project called “Mobilemuseum” performed by The University Museum, The University of Tokyo.  “Altorrelieve de Serpiente” is a replica of relief of a snake found during the excavation in 1997, elaborated by Eisei Tsurumi of the University Museum.
