Hazrat Baba Haji Sher (RA) is one of the earliest Muslim Sufi saint in the Subcontinent Indo-Pak. 

Baba Haji Sher Muhammad Dewan Chawli Mashaikh (RA) have played pivotal roll in establishment of Islam as religion and the area has great significance in this regard as the first Dargah Shareef of sub-continent Indo-Pak is situated here some 17 kilometers away which is a place of religious activities and mental satisfaction.Hazrat Baba Haji Sher (RA) embraced Islam on 27th Ramadan-ul-Mubarak 131 Hijri.

Baba Haji Sher Dewan embraced Islam when he was arrested in war between Waliey Sindh and Islamic forces Hazrat Baba Haji Sher Muhammad Dewan (RA) also participated in the war and was detained and brought to Madina as a prisoner where he was very much touched by the preaching of the religion and accepted Islam on the hands of Hazrat Imam Hussain (Razi Allahu Anhu ) and got education from the different Sahaba-e-Ikram and he also performed Hajj there. Hazrat Baba Haji Sher spent some days on the Dargah Shareef of Hazrat Awais Qarni (RA) and got mysticism from there.

Hazrat Baba Haji Sher Muhammad Dewan religious and Sufism importance is very high and other Sufis preachers of Islam including Hazrat Baba Faridudin Masud Ganj Shakar (RA), Hazrat Bahuddin Zakrai Multani (RA), Hazrat Syed Jalaluddin Shah Bukhari (RA), Hazrat Usman Marvandi(RA),Lal Shahbaz Qalandar (RA) and Sikhism founder Baba Guru Nannak stayed at his Dargah Shareef and performed chillah there .

  The 1302nd Urs of Hazrat Baba Haji Sher Muhammad Dewan Chawali Mashaikh started at Chak 317/EB, 17 kilometers away from Burewala, on Friday. This place has a great significance because it is considered as the first shrine of the sub-continent and people comes here for religious and mental consolation. Before embracing Islam, the name of Hazrat Sher Muhammad Chawali Mashaikh was Rai Chawala. According to available references, Hazrat Baba Haji Sher Muhammad Dewan Chawali’s father Raja Mahinpal was son of Raja Dahar who was the follower of Buddhism. He was the chief of Rajput’s Lakkan tribe of Sindh and his one ‘rani’ was from Chunian, Kasur. She was mother of Baba Haji Sher and other child was his sister named ‘Kanganbars’. The mother of Haji Sher brought a village in her dowry and name of the village is Kanganpur. It still exists in Chunian tehsil near Lahore (Pakistan).


Baba Haji Sher and his sister Kanganbars were very interested in Islam and both embraced Islam. As a result, the entire family became their enemies and they martyred Hazrat Baba Haji Sher on 27th Ramadanul Mubarik 131 AH when he was saying his prayers. Later, his sister also died in sorrow of his brother. Baba Haji Sher Dewan embraced Islam when he was arrested during a war between Wali-e-Sindh and Islamic forces. He also participated in the war and was detained. He was moved by the preaching of Islam and embraced it. He got religious education from different Sahaba-e-Ikram (RA) and he also performed Haj there. 

Hazrat Baba Haji Sher spent some days at the shrine of Hazrat Awais Qarni (RA) and got mysticism from there. Hazrat Baba Haji Sher Muhammad Dewan religious and Sufism importance is very high and other Sufi preachers of Islam, including Hazrat Baba Fariduddin Masood Ganj Shakar, Hazrat Bahauddin Zakrai Multani, Hazrat Syed Jalaluddin Shah Bukhari, Hazrat Usman Marvandi Lal Shahbaz Qalandar and Sikhism founder Baba Guru Nanak, also stayed at his shrine and performed ‘chilah’ there. 

Hazrat Baba Fariduddin Ganj Shakar (RA) was born at this place and the shrine of his parents still exists. Hazrat Baba Fariduddin Masood Ganj Shakar performed a ‘chilah’. A famous mosque is still there where our Sufis, including Hazrat Baba Fariddudin Ganj Shakar, Hazrat Bahauddin Multani, Hazrat Syed Jalaluddin Shah Bukhari and Hazrat Usman Marvandi Lal Shahbaz Qalandar spent heir time. 

Devotees consider the shrine of Hazrat Baba Haji Sher Muhammad Dewan a place for the recovery of patients suffering from mental diseases. The patients are chained at the shrine for three consecutive days and nights and it is said that they recover through spiritual power. ‘Kheer’, a sweet dish made with rice and milk, is served among the people. On the day of Urs, a rain of solid sweets among the devotees is also a famous act. The shrine was first completed by Sultan Mahmood Ghaznavi at a cost of Rs 50,000. Later, Mughal Emperor Jahangir renovated it. Dewan Mool Raj reconstructed the shrine with the touch of 17th and 19th century architecture.
