Curriculum vitae - GUY DE MEY

 

The Belgian tenor Guy de Mey studied with Erna Spoorenberg, Sir Peter Pears and Eric Tappy. Today he can look back on an impressive international career with hundreds of concerts  and opera performances throughout Europe, the United States, Canada, Israël and Japan.

Meanwhile he made his debut at ROH COVENT GARDEN as Linfea Cavalli’s La Calisto under Ivor Bolton and as Guillot de Morfontaine in Manon under Antonio Pappano next to Anna Netrebko and Vittorio Grigolo and at LA SCALA di Milano as Tichon, in Katia Kabanova under Sir J.E. Gardiner and Tanzmeister in Ariadne auf Naxos under Jeffrey Tate.

 

Other engagements since 2006 included: guest performances in Zürich in L'Etoile (Chabrier) under Sir J.E. Gardiner and in Ariadne auf Naxos by Chr. Von Dohnanyi ; at Bavarian State Opera Munich, he appeared in the world creation of Alice in Wonderland by Unsuk Chin, as Monsieur Triquet in Kr. Warlikowski’s  sensational Onegin, in Idomeneo and in  Ariadne auf Naxos (led by Kent Nagano) and at the Liceu Barcelona in Monteverdi’s Poppea under Harry Bicket.

 

In between Guy de Mey performed again several roles in Alice in Wonderland (directed by Mira Bartov) at Grand Théâtre de Genève, Tichon (Katia Kabanova) at Teatro Real de Madrid (under Jiri Belohlavek), as in the Opera Houses of Oviedo and at ONR Strasbourg, Vitek (The Makropulos Case - direction Robert Carsen) at DNO Amsterdam (under Yannick Nézet-Séguin) and at ONR Strasbourg (under Friedemann Layer), Triquet at Flanders Opera and at DNO Amsterdam (directed by Stefan Herheim) and in concert with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra (both under Mariss Jansons).

 

More recently Guy de Mey he sang Basilio (Nozze di Figaro) at ROH Covent Garden, Frick (La vie parisienne) at ONR Strasbourg and currently Aristea (L'Orontea) at the Opera House of Frankfurt. Future engagements will see him appearing at La Scala and the famous Salzburger Festspiele.

Guy de Mey has made more than 50 recordings with reputated conductors (John Eliot Gardiner, Ton Koopman, Roger Norrington, Michel Corboz, William Christie, Jordi Savall, Nicholas McGegan, René Jacobs, Marc Minkowski...). Several of these recordings were distinguished with international prizes (Grand Prix du Disque, Deutscher Schallplattenpreis, Caecilia Award, Diapason d’Or).

 

Other career highights are his appearances in Mozart’s “Zauberflöte” and Monteverdi’s “Orfeo” under Roger Norrington at the London Proms and at the English National Opera; Lully’s “Atys” under William Christie at the Paris Opera, in Firenze and New York; Berg’s “Lulu” with Teresa Stratas in a production by Ruth Berghaus, and “Boris Godunov” with José Van Dam at the Brussels Opera La Monnaie; Händel’s “Judas Maccabaeus” with the San Francisco Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra; Bach’s “Matthäus Passion” with the Concertgebouw orkest  Amsterdam ; Berlioz’ “L’Enfance du Christ” at the Festival of Aix-en-Provence; Scarlatti’s “Mitridate” at the Schwetzinger Festspiele; Debussy’s “Pelléas et Mélisande” at the Nantes Opera ; Berg’s “Lulu” and Janacek’s “The cunning little Vixen” and "Katja Kabanova" at the Flemish Opera (Antwerp/Ghent). Furthermore Guy de Mey appeared with major operas by Monteverdi and Cavalli at New Israeli Opera Tel Aviv, Spoleto Festival USA/Charleston, Bavarian Opera as well as at the Operahouses of Paris and Copenhagen.

 

Since 1995 Guy de Mey has been teaching at the Royal Flemish Conservatory in Antwerp.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Curriculum vitae - DIETER VAN HANDENHOVEN

 

Dieter Van Handenhoven studied at the conservatories of Antwerp and Brussels. Besides the Higher Diploma organ he also holds a Master's degree harpsichord.

 

As a teacher, he is associated with the music academy of Sint-Niklaas and with the music academy of Lebbeke.

 

He is a regular guest on organ cycles and has given recitals in a.o. the Saint Bavo Cathedral in Ghent and the Cathedral of Our Lady in Antwerp. He is also a much sought after continuo player.

 

As a conductor, Dieter Van Handenhoven has been active for a long time. He is the founder of the vocal ensemble "Arc Sonore" and since 1993 he is the conductor of the boys' choir "In Dulci Jubilo" from Sint-Niklaas. With this choir he performs regularly at home and abroad.
