An In-depth Anaylsis

Publius Servilius Casca Longus was born into a wealthy family. He and his brother both held high positions in the government. Casca's title was "Tribune of the People". This position gave him special privileges such as having the ability to propose new laws, and calling the Plebian Court to order. He was so high ranked that any attack against him was considered to be a criminal offense.

Casca liked being on the winning side. He would lick the boots of anyone who had the upper hand, and side with them. When Caesar wasn't as powerful, Casca stuck with Pompey, and basked in Pompey's great victories. However, he quickly switched alliances, and watched emotionless as the great Pompey fell.

Casca and his brother were originally on Pompey's side during the civil war between Pompey and Caesar. However, they begged for forgiveness to Caesar, and they were granted mercy. Although they were considered long time friends of Caesar's, both brothers joined the assassination attempt.

During the assassination, Casca was the first one to strike a blow. He sneaked up behind Caesar, and struck Caesar on the neck. However, the blow was poorly struck, and Caesar did not die immediately. Sources say that Caesar turned around and said: "What dost thou, villain Casca?" Afterward, the rest of the conspirators moved in for the kill.

After Brutus and Cassius were exiled, the rest of the conspirators were exiled too. Casca went into hiding because he feared for his life. There aren't any records of the last two years of his life, but we do know that he committed suicide after two years of exile. Perhaps he thought that he had dishonored his family, and suicide was the only way of bring back honor to his name.
