Adopting an animal from a shelter is a rewarding experience for both the adopter and the animal.  But sometimes even though we would like to take an animal in, circumstances won't permit it.  Perhaps you aren't home very much, you live in an apartment that doesn't allow pets or maybe you're even allergic to pet hair!  Fortunately there are many ways you can help shelter animals that don't involve adoption.  Anything you can do, no matter how small, matters!

Have just a few hours a month

you can spare?

Volunteers are always in demand at shelters for all kinds of jobs!  You can choose how many hours you want, the times that work for you and what type of job you would feel comfortable volunteering for.  Usually a shelter will work with you so you feel comfortable and both of you find a perfect fit.  Some things that are usually needed are:

Dog Walkers

Dog Bathers

Cleaning dogs living quarters

Feeding dogs

Office Help

Transporting dogs to events or other locations

Showing dogs at events for adoption

Being a Foster Home temporarily for a dog

Working in the clinic

Shelters can always use supplies too!  Check out your local shelter online for a list of items they would greatly appreciate.  Generally they can use dog food, kitty litter, cleaning supplies and office supplies.

when you Adopt a dog or cat that needs a forever home you will end up wondering

who rescued who.

If you can't make that long term commitment

just remember, shelters are full and foster homes are always needed.  If you can provide a temporary home from time to time until that forever home comes around for a dog or cat in need, you may just save a life.

And of course, it goes without saying that

a monthly monetary commitment, no matter how small does make a difference.  Never feel that you can't give "enough".
