With less than thirteen hours to make his decision, Sonny gets ready and drives to work.Meanwhile in Seattle, the GM for the Seahawks wants to wheel and deal with Sonny. He has the #1 pick in this year’s draft and wants Sonny’s first round draft picks for the next three years for it. Under pressure from the Browns’ owner, local media, and the citizens of Cleveland to make the right decision, Sonny reluctantly agrees to the deal. He gets to work and makes the announcement to his scouts and head coach, Vince Penn. Penn is happy to get the number one pick, but furious that he was neither consulted nor will have any big picks for the next three years.

On top of that pressure, Sonny’s mom wants to spread the ashes of her late husband on the practice field, since it’s named after his father, the former coach of the Browns.According to the media and the rest of the league, the player that should be chosen as the first pick is Bo Callahan, a quarterback from the University of Wisconsin. Everyone wants Sonny to pick him, but he already has a QB on the team that he believes in and other prospects in consideration including Vontae Mack, a linebacker from Ohio State, and Ray Jennings, a kid whose father played for the Browns. With less than ten hours to go and every distraction coming in and out of his office, will Sonny be able to make the right decision that’s best for the team and who will he pick?To be a Cleveland sports fan is like being in an abusive relationship. You love your partner for they joy they provide, but it comes at the price of constant pain and heartache.

I am a Clevelander. I am proud to say that. I love my Browns, Indians, and Cavaliers. I witnessed John Elway’s drive and Ernest Byner’s fumble. I watched my Indians loose in Game 7 of the World Series against the Marlins. My town’s heart broke when LeBron took his talents to South Beach and did it like a coward on national TV. But nothing was worse than Art Modell moving our team to Baltimore and winning a Super Bowl just a couple of years later. That should have been our trophy, not Baltimore’s. When it comes to sports, we just can’t catch a break.Cleveland is the butt of so many jokes when it comes to sports that the only way our teams win is when Hollywood makes a movie about them. Case in point Major League. And whether or not you liked Major League, it did accurately capture the spirit of what it’s like to be a fan of a Cleveland sports team.

When I saw Hollywood was making another sports movie, this time about the Browns, I was curious if it would be respectful to the team, the city, and of course the fans. I am proud to say that not only is Draft Day a very entertaining movie for casual and hardcore fans of the entire league, but Clevelanders will really appreciate all the little attentions to detail used from historic landmarks, real members of the fabled “Dawg Pound,” and local radio personalities as not only the film’s narrative, but as an honest voice of the Cleveland fan.The movie stars Kevin Costner as Sonny Weaver Jr., the General Manager of the Browns. The movie is absolutely about football and the draft, but there is a bit of a romantic twist. This was absolutely perfect for Costner to be the lead, because you can’t think of romantic sports comedies without Bull Durham and Tin Cup coming to mind. I really enjoyed how Costner was able to command the situations.

As GM, he had every pressure in the world trying to distract him. He was like Atlas holding the weight of Cleveland on his back. He barely blew his cool, but when he did, it was warranted. He was funny, but in an almost stoic sort of way. You could see the pressure was getting to him, but he was able to have his character push through the obstacles like a bulldozer to get the job done.(Download Draft Day Movie) I’d compare the character to Brad Pitt as Billy Beane in Moneyball. Costner is definitely not as worthy of an Oscar nomination as Pitt was, but both characters dealt with comparable pressures of owners, coaches, players, fans, media, and staff. Both handled the situations knowing there is a method to their madness and people either need to believe in them or get the hell out of their way.Sonny’s biggest distractions come from the main supporting cast. Jennifer Garner is Sonny’s pregnant girlfriend and Browns’ exec Ali, Denis Leary is Head Coach Vince Penn, and Frank Langella is team owner Harvey Molina.

As always Jennifer Garner was lovely. She plays a sports lawyer who is charge of maintaining the team’s salary cap. She doesn’t necessarily pressure Sonny into fatherhood as more provide the pressure of it by dropping the bombshell the night before. Garner and Costner were a believable couple. Yes there is an age difference, but as a good onscreen couple, they challenged and supported each other. Garner’s character was just as strong as Costner’s in her own right,(Download Draft Day Movie) especially when standing up the to all the machismo walking around in the Browns’ hallways. She never backed down, especially when people were verbally belittling the new intern. Denis Leary as Coach Penn is the new coach who replaced Sonny’s father. He’s won a Super Bowl with the Dallas Cowboys and is not afraid of shoving his championship ring in people’s faces. For football fans out there, I felt the character was highly influenced by Barry Switzer who replaced Jimmy Johnson as coach of “America’s Team.” If you know anything about the real-life coach, then you pretty much know about the fictional character.

Leary was arrogant and cocky and perfect for the role. His fast talking and verbage reminded me a lot of his old stand up days. Langella as the team owner reminded me of a typical rich guy who knows about business, but nothing about football. His character made his fortune from the water park he owns. NE Ohioans will recognize that the opening scene with Sonny and Harvey was filmed at Geauga Lake’s Wild Water Kingdom.You can’t have a sports movie without having athletes.(Download Draft Day Movie) Josh Pence is Bo Callahan, the projected first round draft pick whose agent is played by Sean “Diddy” Combs. He knows he’s good, and he’s cocky about it. Tom Welling is current Browns QB Brian Drew. He got hurt in last year’s season, but has rehabilitated himself to the best shape of his life. He’s upset with Sonny for even considering adding another quarterback to the roster.

This leads to more headaches for Sonny. Chadwick Boseman as Vontae Mack is the young linebacker who is begging to play for the Browns. He has a bit of a background story that I don’t want to spoil. He tries really hard to convince Sonny that he’ll be a better choice for the team than Callahan. Finally is Arian Foster as Ray Jennings. He’s a running back whose dad, played by Terry Crews,(Download Draft Day Movie) is a former Browns player. Ray ran into a bit of trouble with the law in college, but wants Sonny to know that trouble is in his past. Foster is a real life running back that has played for the Houston Texans since 2009. None of these actors gave that memorable of performances as they were all pretty stereotypical. The only problem I had was with Vontae Mack. The movie seemed like it went above and beyond trying to ghetto him up.

The character is covered with prison quality tattoos and has a brass knuckles iPhone case. The character just looked a bit ridiculous which to me made his appearance overshadow his conviction.Draft Day is directed by Ivan Reitman, which if you don’t already know, is the same director of Stripes, Kindergarten Cop, and of course both Ghostbusters movies. What Reitman does in Draft Day as he has done in past movies and that is make realistic situations funny. For the most part,(Download Draft Day Movie) many could easily classify Draft Day as a drama with funny moments, but the film’s wit and humor kept it grounded as still being a comedy. Who really steals the show is Sonny’s brand new intern Rick portrayed by Griffin Newman. Any time things gets hectic or tense, Newman’s character comes in to cut the tension with his nerdy charm. Another thing I really liked in the movie were the split screen shots between the actors.

instead of just a simple black bar separating the people talking, a cool Photoshop like effect cut the actors out of their environment and crossed the line into the other actor’s location. This technique allowed for such a neat visual.I really had a fun time with Draft Day and I’m not just saying that because I live in Cleveland. I feel true football fans of the entire league will like the portrayals of the GM’s, Coaches, and Scouts. The characters debate player statistics,(Download Draft Day Movie) salary caps, and positions like a bunch of guys drafting their fantasy leagues. Fans will also be able to relate a lot of characters to real-life counterparts. Casual fans will appreciate being educated on the whole draft process by ESPN’s Chris Berman and Cleveland sports media personality Tony Rizzo. I personally wasn’t too keen on the whole relationship aspect of the story as it pretty much would have been the exact same story if Sonny and Ali were just co-workers, but I understand why it was included.

Draft Day doesn’t necessarily have the same quality caliber of story and characters as Moneyball does, but I found it equally entertaining as I enjoyed the behind the scenes look into the world of professional sports.(Watch Draft Day Online For With High Speed) As a Cleveland sports fan, I do hope Draft Day gives off some good karma on the real Browns in the same manner Major League did for the Indians as they finally started having winning seasons and eventually went to the World Series in 1995. Maybe I might be able to see my home team go to the Super Bowl once in my lifetime. But who am I kidding? We are talking about the Cleveland Browns after all.
