The Cedaredge Bruin’s track team had another successful weekend at the home meet on March 29th.  From relays to individual races, many of CHS runners excelled at their events.

The girl’s 4x4, made up of Mackenzie Kehmeier, Kendall McHugh, Kenzie Henderson and Nellie Freeman, is now ranked first in state. “I feel we are on the right track to accomplishing the goals we have set for the future, “ says Mackenzie Kehmeier after hearing her team is ranked first.

The girls relay is not the only team that had found success at the meet.  Jacob Robb, Ryan Latta, Bryce Klaseen and Brendon Klaseen were part of the third place boy’s 4x4 team. The girl’s 4x1 team, consisting of Kendall McHugh, Shana Dale, Summer Herman, and Amber Jenkins, took first at the home meet.

Many individual runners had an outstanding meet.  Junior Xander Camp placed second in the 100-meter dash. “I should have won,” he said when asked about his performance.

In the girls’ 100-meter dash, Cedaredge had two runners place. Summer Herman tied for fourth and Kendall McHugh came in sixth. Shane Gates placed in two hurdle events. He took third in the 300-meter hurdle and sixth in the 100-meter hurdles.  All of these runners are being rewarded for the hard work they have put into this season.

Cedaredge High School’s track season is just beginning. The runners are working hard everyday. “This track season has been going really well.         Everyone is improving every meet, making our team more successful,” says sophomore Kendall McHugh. With another successful year, the runners know that they still have much to work on. They are willing to work as hard as the can to reach their goals and to reach the state completion.

Invitational Track Meet

The track meet on March 29th was on a beautiful, sunny day. All eyes were on the athletes, who were running, throwing, and jumping their way to the top. The long jump and high jump events were particularly exciting, with Cedaredge athletes making it to the finals and blowing their competitors away.

Kendall McHugh, a long jumper at CHS, took third in the finals. “I feel really good about my results, since it’s only my first year,” she says. Long jump is Kendall’s favorite event, since it’s more relaxing than running among her competitors. “There are a lot of little things you have to remember while you’re running, while you’re jumping, and even while you’re in the air,” Kendall explains, “But it’s not as much of an adrenaline rush as when you’re in a race. You don’t have to look at the person next to you and see that they’re ahead. It’s more relaxing.”

Shane Gates competed in high jump at the track meet. Although his placing wasn’t what he was going for, he enjoyed the meet and his event. “It was a little stressful, but really fun,” he says. When asked about how he felt about his results, he responded “bad” with a laugh. Shane continued, “High jump is really fun because you’re competing more against yourself than anyone else.” He and Kendall agree that jumping is a more calming, yet still exciting event in track and field.

Both athletes made Cedaredge proud, no matter what their placing was. The jumping events at the track meet were exciting for both the audience and the competitors, and hopefully Cedaredge Track will be graced with Kendall McHugh and Shane Gates, along with the other jumpers at CHS, for years to come.

Soaring Above the Competition

Recently the Bruins made yet another great appearance and gave the home crowd a show. At the Cedaredge Invitational track meet, our very own Austin Williams placed first in both the shot put and discus events. During shot put the throw that gave Austin the lead measured out to an outstanding distance of fifty-four feet and ten inches. What makes this even sweeter to Austin, though, is the fact that he is now the state’s leading shot put thrower. His consistency in throwing this season is certainly a notable accomplishment, and Austin still remains undefeated after four track meets. Great things will undoubtedly come from Austin, and he plans on continuing his success all the way through the Colorado State Track Championships.

Kaitlyn Kissner also made a great appearance at the Cedaredge Invitational, and she brought in a medal for first place in the discus to prove it. Kaitlyn is one of the three seniors who throw for the Bruins, and standing beside her are seniors Micaela Shaw and Taber Anderson. Micaela was right behind Kaitlyn at Cedaredge in the discus event too, so there seems to be some friendly competition between the two. When added up there are only eight throwers, so they stand smaller in numbers than in previous years. The talent is all there, though, no matter the size of the team.

The Bruin throwers definitely put forth the work that is needed further down the road. Each performs with his or her best performance every time, and the home crowd can see this too. The entire track team is small in itself, but this disadvantage in numbers hardly slows the progression toward greatness.
