Sculpture

I often feel most excited by things that I do not understand. Objects, or even people that blur the lines of normalcy, have a way of lingering in our memory longer than those who are more conventionally acceptable. The responsibility of the artist lies not in resting assured that the world can understand your work the way that you do, but in remaining true to you, and simply and honestly describing what we value about being alive.

The sculptures are comprised of women’s nylons, thread, cotton batting, wire and wood. Most of the sculptures are life-size and compare to the human presence. The sculptures are simultaneously attractive and grotesque. They have a life-like quality to them. I hope this combination invites the audience to be forced to make their own connotations from what I feel are like physical poems. Touch is an important aspect of the work. Those who are tempted by the sculptures soft crevices often become self-conscious and pull away. The sculptures are wild and provocative, much like the very process of making these works. The process of making them has been instinctual and is driven by personal experiences, thoughts and desires. I think the work is accessible to everyone in some way because it is direct. I want the sculptures to generate an instinctual level of conversation with the thoughts we all have but are often not spoken.

The structural forms of the wooden shapes provide physical and conceptual contrast to the fleshy forms. It appears the wooden structures are cradling the large organic forms, I think of them as holding back. The fleshy elements are bound by twine. The wood punctures recesses into its surface. There is tension and pressure made evident in the tight binding and pinching of the nylon form. The pressure and tension in the sculptures creates a synesthesia; and from that there is an empathy that I hope to generate in the audience. I want a psychological charge to exist between what is physically happening on the surface of the sculpture and perhaps what is occurring at the innermost levels of the work.

Artwork has a way of saying exactly what you want to, but can’t quite articulate so well in any other way. The art of words only serves me so well and that is why I choose to describe aspects of life in physical form.
