Gene Shimandle - CHF Survivor

Publisher, Editor, (according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer in 2010) Hometown Hero, Teacher, Dad, Husband and Friend

I was the Director of Advanced Cardiac Life Support at a Medical School in 2005 when I was diagnosed with Cardiomyopathy. My heart is 30% larger than it should be.

I had been living with less than a 15% ejection fraction from 2005 until my LVAD implant in July 2013. I am a 1-A candidate for Heart Transplant at the Cleveland Clinic this month. Since the LVAD implant, every day has been better.

In LVAD LIVING you won't see confusing MD/PhD white paper text. I had to dig through, and source out, information I could understand to be able to make good decisions for myself. I am fortunate in that many of my friends are in the medical industry and I rely on them to help me make better decisions.

I have asked other LVAD recipients for stories and the response has been great. I will introduce them with each LVAD LIVING issue. You are not in this alone!
