experiment   02:   Urban   farming

The research deals with the problem of food production and transportation within big metropolitan areas. The main goal of the research driven design investigation is to develop a new model of urban agriculture capable of working both at a global and local scale. The idea is to integrate a model for the intensive production of food, such as the vertical farm, with a series of functions and devices that work at the local scale in a way in which it would be possible to involve the population into the project. In order to integrate the project proposal with the existing dynamic metropolitan system it is necessary to develop a strategy capable of adapting and reacting to the continuous changes. The strategy aims to investigate some concepts directly derived from the field of NS&IA such as self-organization processes based on the swarm behaviour logic. Urban farming, also connotes an environmental sciences approach and thus apart from food production also caters to performative design development based form finding solutions. Understanding morphological complexity as a derivative of multi-relational parameters within the urban, thus became a focus point of the studio.

Experiment 01:   CLIMATIC    ECOLOGIES

.

The research investigations focus on generating self-sustaining Climatic Ecologies. Issues pertaining to the manner in which we situate and generate built architectural forms with regards to the urban settings within which dynamic energy exchanges are established amongst them are of critical importance. The manner in which local and global climatic associations are hence established between a building and its context will be of primary concern in this studio. The design studio, in its quest to envision a sustainable ecology as regards the establishment of a synergistic relation between the environment, architectural space and its urban context aims at developing a relational understanding between physical & climatic principles, computational tools and performance driven form finding processes. The definition and refinement of this central agenda of Climatic Ecologies shall be developed iteratively via individual students and could encompass variable solutions ranging from local micro-climate generation, user centric climate adaptation, energy neutral buildings, adaptive spatial systems, biomimetic designs, green buildings etc. to name a few. In conclusion, the generic design problem centers around the generation of multi-performative architectural formations and their synergistic relationship as regards social sustainability and cyclic energy exchange with a critical urban context.

experiment   03:   performance   driven   design

The research focused on various facets of Performance driven design: sociological, environmental, technological. In doing so, the students develop a critical understanding of the urban through relational data sets of multiple parameters constituting the built environment. Specific focus is provided towards devising abstract computational machines for deriving computational environments within which multi-agent systems operate to generate performative urban patterns while keeping in mind governmental regulations and quantified urban growth strategies. It is within these patterns that a suitable site for architectural intervention is defined and studied intensively. Principles of aggregation, swarm behaviour and complex parametric modelling further drive the bottom-up generation of performative form.

experiment   04:   info-matter

The Info-Matter series of research explorations focuses on understanding the urban context and its impact on the chosen site for architectural intervention via both quantifiable and qualitative means. Multi-agent simulations, wherein agents acquire different properties, ranging from structural, human, functional, infrastructural etc operate on complex interrelationships within themselves and the parameters constituting the urban. This dynamic quality results in the identifying self-organizing agent clusters as a result of multi-optimization amongst the various parameters. The clusters thus embody multiple meanings as regards environmental performance, social inclusion, differential geometric porosity, Material densities etc and serve as a computational footprint for generating architectural formations. A componential approach, which further embodies the logic of speedy fabrication while respecting variation of skin and structural counterparts is subsequently deployed in order to reach a fully performative architectural construct. Generative morphologies, fully equipped with construction solutions as an embedded part and parcel of the design process are thus materialised.
