PROJECT 01: dukuh atas interchange station, jakarta, indonesia
STUDENT: adi fajar utama
The project is an integrated mass transportation node that will become the main intersection point for airport shuttle, train, monorail, bus, boat and subway modes. It is a pilot project for Jakarta mass transport plan to be completed in 2012 in order to solve Jakarta's traffic problems. The site is located in the heart of Jakarta's business district next to the most important highway alongside Jakarta's main river. The initial design is developed from a series of connection studies and volume based requirements which determine the network of routing (point to point route between modes of transport and a loop route which travels around the building in order to discover new spaces and programs). Form finding strategies are thus extracted from this networked infrastructural logic in a parametric manner. Program connectivity with least possible distance travelled, as well as geometric conditions of minimal surfaces are explored extensively to derive topologically continuous and structurally stable configurations. Besides this, bamboo based roofing system, which is a self stable, bottom-up generated structural system is also featured in the project. The structural characteristics of bamboo as well as the possibilities of generating environmentally sound shading and ventilating systems, which derive their position, scale and proportions in space from the inherent material property of bamboo add special character to the entire built form.

PROJECT 02: b_market, rotterdam, netherlands
STUDENT: nam dangho
B_market is a project situated in Rotterdam, Netherlands, which aims at envisioning a new configuration for the existing market place. The scenario, however also includes considering a 24-7 cycle of activities, which will ensure the optimal usage of the site during off-market days. Complex pathfinding solutions which negotiate between different usage patterns during different times of the day as well as the week are developed to derive infrastructural flow patterns. These simulations also incorporate other conditions such as noise patterns, environmental conditions, interaction possibilities as well as practical needs of commercial market vendors. A strategy for developing customisable pluggable pod systems is further initiated on top of the generated infrastructure solutions. This allows for combinations of pods in oder to accomodate varying programatic needs as well as for initiating user driven novel program formation opportunities. Research on computational modes of generating weaving patterns for the proposed infrastructure as well as for mapping the designers visions from a performance driven design perspective is thus proposed.

PROJECT 03: stitching the network, lagos, nigeria
STUDENT: oladayo oladunjoye
The project is based in Lagos, Nigeria and tackles a vital issue of solving traffic congestion and revitalisation of the neighbouring area, which, currently is occupied by shopping malls and a heavily used bridge. The project, in an attempt to re-use the bridge, while at the same time creating a social hub for the community proposes a hybrid structure, which acts as a bridge, a parking facility as well as an entertainment hub. Extensive contextual research yielded the extraction of the most vital parameters to be bound in a relational computational system. Grasshopper as a scripting system is used to generate an infrastructural pattern which interweave different programs into a comprehensive relational network. Widths of the connecting infrastructures is also derived parametrically via simulating the expected thoroughfare using crowd simulation algorithms. The skin of the building and the opening patterns are generated in accordance with the climatic conditions in Nigeria using extensive Ecotect analysis while respecting visibility angles, air flow patterns and solar exposure values.

PROJECT 04: experimental housing, taipei, taiwan
STUDENT: wan-yu liu
The project attempts to generate user-activity (in time) driven housing typology generation in Lane 359 (Yuanlin, Changhua, Taiwan). The project involves a unique combination of Chinese philosophy and Algorithmic design, which results in interfacing traditional symbolism and coordinate values for positioning the elements with environmental analysis and the living culture in Changhua, Taiwan. Family structures and patterns of family transitions/evolution, which result in changing spatial usage and occupancy patterns are carefully studied and used as algorithmic sequences for generating evolutionary spatial systems. Computational techniques such as the Marching cube algorithm as well as Java applets for visualizing recursive evolutionary patterns of growth in time are subsequently developed. Extensive structural analysis and environmental simulation, coupled with lifestyles and family unit status thus define multiple custom made typologies. These are further prototyped and showcased as formations in time, which are prone to change with changing occupancy status per family.
