PROJECT 01:   CITY   PORT   UNIT   (CPU)

STUDENT: serban    bodea

CityPortUnit is an investigation into why and how architectural programs are created. Can our cities be seen as entities in synchrony, as nodes of decentralised networks and if so, how does this impact their response to changes in neighbouring or distant nodes? The project and research try to answer these question by proposing a link to strengthen relations between Port and City in Rotterdam, a showcase for an innovative industry that promises to alter our way of using natural resources, The Algal Biomass Industry. As new programs emerge, technologies and materials may inform and radically impact the way in which we perceive urban space and well established urban genres. We develop a design process driven by local conditions, through algorithmic design and digital fabrication, as we look more in detail at materialization and the use of 3D Printed Fibrous Assemblages. The methods employed in this project revolve around researching emergent behaviors in a swarm of intelligent agents that interact with each-other and their environment based on simple rules, negotiating and altering energy and matter-flows on the site. The parameters informing the emergence of behavioral patterns will be results of social(community), geometric(site), ecological(micro-climatic) conditions in the area of Noordereiland, in Rotterdam. Ultimately, the project uses Object-Oriented Programming(OOP) & Object-Oriented Design (OOD) to explore the way in which informed computational objects interact with each other in ways that cannot be simply described as sums of their individual qualities, in other words, emergent properties of large bodies of agents.
The Geometric results of the design phase and the choice of techniques and topological logics to implement were always informed by the architectural goal of providing an environment that serves its users and the urban environment it operates in.
From that point of view, CPU has successfully integrated architectural and urban elements belonging to a rethought Urban Park function, also considering interdisciplinary elements that contributed to the ecologically friendly nature of the design (using microalgae-growth technology to inform and give meaning to the design).

PROJECT 02:   Living   geometries

STUDENT:  Ana   anton

Living Geometries researches a contemporary strategy for developing a housing community as an ever-growing urban entity, describing a system that allows for spaces to be continuously used and permanently active. The project creates an integrated design where alternations between spaces, functions and materials are seamless. The design progress integrates the early reflections on emergent social behaviours on site and computational experiments into a smart self-regulating organism materialised through contemporary means of digital fabrication.
The project is developed following OOP(Object Oriented Programming) and OOD(Object Oriented design) methodologies. Based on the analysis, decisions on environmental issues are addressed. The next step consists of simulations, with the chosen technique of Diffusion Limited Aggregation. Simulations are motivated by scientific advances in the field of informatics and information technology,
and sustained by advances in digital fabrication techniques. Throughout the design process, Diffusion Limited Aggregation, will be researched as a way of simulating the emergence of informed living-geometries within the socio-economic environment of a
new housing community in Rotterdam. The parameters essential for deploying the script in a highly informed and architecturally-relevant way will arise from specific ecological and sociological explorations of the urban environment. Consequently, a more informed design strategy can be formulated. It is important to mention that the architectural object is emergent.

PROJECT 03:   transportation   hub,  rotterdam

STUDENT:  guo   xi

We are in a digital era , the development of technology affects architectural design conception and fabrication, management and usage as well as life cycles to a large extent. This project and its approach can be considered as a product that is generated within this digital social context.
The design methodology is divided into three parts, bottom up computational topology, top down architectural morphology and digitized construction optimization. Through logical steps, systematic thinking, and digital data exchanging,, the project involves generating a performative urban pattern, architectural form finding, real-time interactive building skin system and a computationally generated construction logic. The project is generated from the social context using computational strategies of agent based modelling, By designing the building skin and the environmentally interactive skin components, the building interacts with the elements to impact the micro climate of the building.

PROJECT 04:   transportation   hub,  Guangzhou,  China

STUDENT:  guangkai   liang

The project focuses on the Huanshi East CBD in Guangzhou, China. This CBD has some inborn weakness when compared to the other CBDs due to critical urban planning mistakes. The first one being that the core of this CBD is divided into two parts by a busy road. The buildings in this area are thus completely disconnected. People who want to go to the other sides of the CBD have to walk for a long time or experience walking through an anxiety space under the Huanshi East Road. Besides this, people in this area also lack space for recreation and public activities. The aforementioned factors decrease the attractiveness of this CBD. To deal with the huge amount of information of the site efficiently, the application of advanced digital tools and design methodology became an important part of the design exploration. More precisely, combined with the outcome of urban analysis and climate study, a system that refers to the concept of self organising system / agent based modelling is built for simulating the functional arrangement and the generation of the initial form – finding. By analyzing the results of these simulations, conclusions were made with regards to public/private zones, topology and location as well as morphological translations. After that, in the design development stage, with the aid of advanced analysis tools and modelling tools, different aspects of the design such as form and opening patterns were optimised according to environmental parameters, social context and the programatic requirements.

PROJECT 05:   reclaiming   arcadia,   greece

STUDENT:  georgia    syriopoulou

The project is an experiment in a mountainous province of Greece, typical in its characteristics of similar areas, with low productivity, and socially deconstructed by the subsequent desertion of the last forty years. The goal of the project was the formation of a human ecology that would interweave the social structure of the community and the agricultural production processes, incorporated within the intense topography of the site. The target was the realization of a metabolic function of the system in which material and energy cycles are closed, work and recreational routines are merged and contrasting functions and needs are co-functioning beneficially. Generally low-tech processes were integrated in a distributed energy and material exploitation and re-use system, that functions in the small scale of the project, taking advantage of local conditions and co-existencies. The initial idea of a garden with multiple cultivations and activities was therefore realized and accentuated through the interweaving of human scale working, socializing and cultivation spaces in a flowing architectural narrative corresponding to the cultural and climatic Mediterranean context. The ground itself, with its intensive topography was recognized as the morphogenetic medium, the mediator between the natural and the artificial topography, the natural and the mechanical energy-material flows.

PROJECT 06:   diy +  culture  center,  netherlands

STUDENT:  jingyi    li

The project makes use of computational methodologies such as swarm simulations, complex geometry and responsive building facades in order to generate a networked spatial system. The project, based in Rotterdam, Netherlands, operates in between a maze of high speed highways and specifically caters to the immediate issues of Noise, Pollution, Visibility and Internal connectivity. The context is taken into consideration via an agent based self organization of functional placement within the project as an active response to the immediate needs of the different demographics surrounding the site. Simulations successively build up the morphology of the project, starting from the internal street network of the project (navigating through the complex maze of highways) and ending up with a computationally generated noise response based facade system. A programatic symbiosis involving the use of DIY centre, Reading and community interaction hubs, Green highways, Cultural hubs etc create a lively ecology amidst the busy highways.
