Biography

Born in Charlotte, North Carolina, Walter Ragan Dickson’s interest in photography came at a young age watching his father use film cameras on family trips and at concerts. Walter has looked through many picture magazines such as Time, Vogue, Rolling Stone, and Kerrang. All have influenced his work. While mainly working in portraiture his intentions are to make the viewer wonder about the individuals in his photographs. Currently a candidate for a B.F.A. with a concentration in commercial photography, Walter plans on going into fashion and music photography and later back to school for his master’s degree.

Artist Statement

When creating imagery I want the viewer to think about the photographs to decipher a meaning behind the work. The purpose of this series is to convey how both younger and older generations view body modifications. With the growing popularity of body modifications, it is becoming more common in the workplace despite the fact that it is not appreciated by all employers. My subject matter was influenced by a series of tintype photographs from the late 1800s I found that depicted carnival and circus sideshows. Using a modern tintype method helps convey how different generations

view the subject matter.
