Biography

Elise Chapman's father was in the military and as a child she moved around quite a bit. Ending up in South Carolina, she discovered her love for art late in her senior year of high school and decided to pursue her new found passion as a career path. She is now a B.F.A. candidate with a concentration general studio from Winthrop University. Elise loves all mediums but prefers to work two-dimensionally. She practices and explores art-making daily.

Artist Statement

I create non-representational compositions through the use of a non-traditional mark-making. I use my body in place of a paintbrush in order to develop a larger vocabulary of shape and interaction. The resulting image is a composition incorporating shapes reminiscent of the body, but not completely obvious as far as the source is concerned. Imprinting my own body upon the substrate creates a unique conversation between the artist, the work, and the audience. The choice of color, additional drawn elements, and scale pull the audience into and through the artwork, allowing the piece to

become an experience.
