A fantastic day, glorious sunshine and forecast to stay that way for the rest of the day so where was everyone. Only seven for the A walk and five for the B. Four of us set off for Wythop Church, Chris and Helen, Alan and myself and we met up with Lynda at the start point. We set off up the lovely grassy path to Lowthwaite and had a short coffee stop at the top while we admired the views of Bassenthwaite and Skiddaw. We headed across to Sale Fell and down to Dodd Cragg, we decided to stop for lunch on the corpse road about half way up Ling Fell. We sat in the lovely sunshine enjoying our lunch and talked about lots of things, the main topic was, surprisingly, suicide, why do people do it? Lynda pointed out that following one of my walks there could well be four people contemplating it by the end of the day. We reached the trig point at the top of Ling Fell and Alan decided he would like to sit on top of it. I had to give him a leg up and also had to use my head to support him. It occurred to me, when I was in this position, that I was in imminent  danger. I know only too well, from personal experience, that when you reach a certain age the slightest exertion can produce a totally unexpected and fierce passing of wind . Alan managed to restrain himself  and fortunately for me this did not occur. We headed off in the home direction, The Forestry people had felled a few trees and altered the paths a bit but my homing instincts and superb sense of direction came to the fore and we emerged from the trees exactly where we were supposed to. We reached the cars and Lynda showed off her brand new car, which she had acquired only this week, very nice it was too. Lynda headed home and the rest of us headed for Carlisle via the Craggs Coffee Shop, where we had a very nice cup of coffee. A wonderful day, thanks to everyone for coming. A fond farewell to Alan who is going home to Australia this week, we’ll look forward to seeing him  again next year.
