B Walk Sunday 13th April 2014

Scout Scar

8 Miles Grade 3

Leaders: Chris & Tom Fortune

Report by Tom Fortune

It was gratifying to see that the recent increase in support for the Sunday coach rambles is continuing, this week 37 club members turned out nearly a third of whom were part of the ‘C’ team, a core of the club who have been sadly missed throughout  much of the winter. Still now that spring is here everything is back as it should be. An intrepid 12 of us set out on the ‘B’ walk but not before we had a toilet faff. I had been rather lazy on my recce and had not found out the location of suitable facilities at the start of the walk and so turned to the font of all local knowledge, who as far as I’m concerned is Graham, for assistance, and who as usual was willing to help by suggesting a small detour for our party of only about ½ mile there and back to where he would lead us with his own group. So we duly set off altogether with the ‘A’ party. On the way he cautiously mentioned that he hoped it would be open. As we approached the area Graham was dismayed to find that the toilets were nowhere to be seen and then produced something that in retrospect I have upgraded from “quote of the day” to “quote of the season”. Namely “Well it was there 40 years ago!” All’s well that ends well as we reverted to form in an unfamiliar town and made a beeline for Booths. The walk itself was everything that it promised with the exception of the weather which remained dry all day however the forecast Westerly wind was unexpectedly cold and with little or no shelter up on the escarpment ensured that we maintained a brisk warming pace. It also meant that any plans we had for a leisurely lunch at the Scout Scar viewpoint would prove to be too uncomfortable to linger long. This is really just my excuse forgetting us back into Kendal way too early; my estimates were far too cautious. So apologies for the hanging around team, and thank you for your company. A final thank you to Graham Bell who actually found this walk before passing it on to us to include on the programme, and also to Geoff Oxley for a great job as backmarker.
