Report & Photos by John McKay

This is a first for me, I’ve never done a report on a Wednesday walk as this was the first time I’d been on one. I met several members for the first time. Nineteen of us met up in Kirkoswald, or KO as it’s known locally, to be led off by Lynda. It was a late start, 11am, as we were all booked in for dinner at the Featherston Arms at 5.15pm. We went across some very green fields and through some lovely woods where the bluebells were starting to flower. We visited a monument to the Rev George Bramwell Evans, known as Romany, a Methodist minister who presented country programmes on BBC children’s hour back in the thirties. Tony Norwood was the fountain of knowledge who provided me this information and lots of other stuff too. We had an early lunch then headed off for Addingham Church where we had a little tour of the graveyard, some of our party looked like they might be doing a recce. We had a look round the church with it’s beautiful stained glass windows and I couldn’t resist a little pull on the bell ropes hanging at the back of the church, they made a very nice” ding dong” sound. We stopped for a coffee at Long Meg Stone Circle then made our way alongside the River Eden on a lovely path, had a look round Lacy Caves on the way and arrived back in KO just after five. The Featherston Arms was a very nice pub, the food was excellent and the size of the meal was enormous. This could not possibly be a normal portion for a normal person I thought, as I looked at the huge plate in front of me. Could this be what normal people eat, if so, no wonder obesity is on the increase. I managed to eat about half before admitting defeat, I did notice that most people managed to clear their plate. During the meal Judith came round looking for sponsorship for a walk she is doing on behalf of Eden Valley Hospice. She is going to do a six mile circuit of Carlisle dressed in her pyjamas or maybe a onesie, depending on the weather. Worth a few quid of anybody’s money, no doubt she will approach you in the next few weeks. I couldn’t help thinking she would make a lot more money if she wore a baby doll nightie. A great day, a lovely gentle walk in beautiful countryside, superbly led and organised by Lynda, a big thank you to her.  Some great crack along the way, the highlight being the story told by one of our female members of meeting someone on a dating site. They went to an Indian restaurant and she discovered her blind date had no teeth. She had to sit there and watch him suck on his chicken curry. I could write a book about my experience’s on dating sites. Maybe I will one day.
