It was mild and sunny spring day and 21 of us walked through a succession of fields with newly-born lambs and celandine flowers to Woodhall Farm.  The terrain became rugged through open pastures strewn with boulders .  Carrock Beck  was a challenging crossing but we all made it to begin the steep ascent of Carrock Fell, formerly an Iron Age Fort.  With the hardest walking behind us we enjoyed the 2 mile ridge to High Pike Summit.  We were blessed with clear views to snow-streaked Skiddaw and the Pennines from there, but the hazy cloud denied us views of the Solway Estuary.  It was downhill all the way back to picturesque Hesket Newmarket and a welcome cuppa in Caldbeck
