Walk & Event Reports

Seven set off from the Sands heading to Moffat to meet up with Ken at the starting point. It was a strange day weather-wise. Lovely sunny warm periods then suddenly it would be blowing a gale and torrential rain. These horrible spells would last about 5-10 minutes then it would be fine again for 5-10 minutes. Very strange weather for one of my walks, not at all what I ordered. For a change I decided to do the walk in the opposite direction from normal. This turned out to be a good plan and I think I would always do it this way in future. We headed down into the Annan valley (Glen) then set off up the glen heading for the hills. It’s strange when you do a walk in the opposite direction, it doesn’t look the same, I wasn’t sure at a few points which way to go and did miss a turning but assisted by a fellow Scot, Ken, we found the right route. I thought we had another Scot on the walk, Angus, out for his first walk with the club. He turned out to be English but his father was Scottish so that was a plus point. I hope he enjoyed his first walk and we see him back again. We discussed several topics along the way. Scottish Independence, the Commonwealth Games, the lack of walk leaders for the winter programme to name a few. Heather told us she had great difficulty understanding some of the people at the Commonwealth Games. People from all over the world but she couldn’t understand a word uttered by Glaswegians. I can’t think why, I find Glaswegian very easy to understand, it’s Cumbrians I have trouble with. The Glasgow accent is known as “ Patter” and visitors to Glasgow can buy a guide book called “ The Patter” or you can watch some clips on You  Tube entitled “ Parliamo Glasgow” , we do cater for the uneducated. We stopped for lunch but didn’t hang about as we were hit by one of the bad weather periods. We reached the lovely cairn at the end of the Annandale Way and headed for the trig point at Annanhead Hill. Along the way we came across a freshly killed racing pigeon, probably taken by a falcon we were informed by  Ken, a keen twitcher. Its owner is probably sitting in his loft wondering where it is. We arrived back at the cars, in dry condition, then set off for our eagerly anticipated visit to Rumbin Tum. It did not disappoint, we had some lovely toasted tea cakes and chocolate cake. A great day, thanks to everyone who came along, a great bunch.
