Report & Photos by Heather Perrin

Four of us set out on this Easter Sunday to delight in a most enjoyable walk.  Although leaderless, the tasks were neatly divided up; I counted people (very tricky…), and drove.  We agreed at The Sands on the starting point (Martindale Old Church) and agreed yet again on the route once we were there.  On a sunny and gently breezy morning we climbed on green paths onto the ridge of Beda Fell and in spite of the haze, could see Helvellyn, still with its white cornice, and Catstye Cam; to our left, High Street, immediately to our left, The Nab and below, the two valleys of Bannerdale and Boredale.  Reaching the crossroads, the decision was amicably taken to continue to Angletarn Pikes.  Neil took the opportunity for a little playful scramble, then, in spite of the blustery wind, we dined in a sheltered spot leaning in the sun against some rocks.  It was very pleasant to imagine all the hordes in Pooley Bridge and Keswick while we revelled in the quiet and solitude. Reaching Boredale Hause, Joe was eager to do Place Fell so we started upwards.  However, Neil was casting a wary eye on the gathering clouds, Pat was very worried by the strong gusts and we took the decision to return downwards to Boredale Valley.  The hills started to look moody as we donned waterproofs and descended on the stony path.  A surprise on the hillside which we wouldn’t have seen had we continued up to Place Fell; if you look closely at two of the photos, you will see deer, lots of deer.  Fully justified in our decision, we strode along the valley road until the decision to go ‘over the top’ to return to the church.  While ascent at this stage didn’t come easily, the seat at Winter Crag was a delight.  Finally, Pooley Bridge looking decidedly over-populated, we drove to Stainton for a welcome cuppa.  A big thank you to three lovely companions for a cracking good day!
