Forty on the coach this morning, the good weather forecast does it again. There were thirteen of us for the A walk and the coach dropped us off at Tebay. The weather was brilliant, glorious sunshine but not too warm and the visibility was great, a perfect day for walking. We headed up Tebay Fell and on to Blease Fell. The views were fantastic in all directions. There were quite a few others out on the hills, obviously tempted by the good weather. We were climbing all the time but it was fairly gradual though there were some quite steep sections and I must admit there were moments when I wondered if I had made the right choice of walk. We reached Blackthwaite Bottom, whoever named it was having a laugh as we were climbing all the time. We found a nice spot for lunch during which Peter told us he was thinking of arranging a meal at the end of next week’s A walk. The likely choice was a restaurant in Cleator which was once an old school house. I asked him if it was a “School Dinners” type restaurant and explained to him that “School Dinners” was a restaurant in Baker Street in London that I used to frequent and it turned out Bernard was also regular visitor. It was a unique dining experience, typical school meals but it did have its attractions. The waitresses dressed in true St Trinian’s style, very short skirts, black stockings and suspenders and they would sit on your knee and spoon feed you. The main courses were rubbish and very expensive, the “afters’” menu was quite comprehensive and even more expensive. I went there for business reasons and so did Bernard. I’ve had to endure some terrible jobs in my life and it sounds as if Bernard did too. Somehow I couldn’t imagine the restaurant in Cleator being run on the same lines. We set off after lunch for the Calf, the high point of the day and I was relieved when we reached the trig point, the climbing was just about over for the day. There were a few slight inclines on the way down to Sedbergh but it was more or less downhill all the way. We arrived in Sedbergh at bang on 4pm, perfect timing and had tea and coffee and some lovely cake in the café. We discovered during this period that Roger had gone to the same school as the famous singer & songwriter David Bowie, never being a fan I can’t recall any of his hits, Roger, who was a prefect at the time, I would never have guessed, reported Bowie for a minor infringement, for which he received detention. What a delightful little boy you must have been Roger. We set off on the coach for a nice restful journey home. A brilliant walk, great weather, great scenery, great crack and a great bunch. Superbly led by Peter as usual.
