Relevant course experience

I have taken classes which have helped me develop my interest in environmental science and other disciplines. These courses have also allowed me to develop invaluable professional skills for the future.

Environmental research

I have been able to see the scientific method in action during the three years of undergraduate research I've been a part of at Ithaca College. Building a research experiment from the ground-up is a valuable skill I have acquired. Research projects in the past include: testing the effects of brine salts on freshwater fish, investigating the effects of nonylphenol on lettuce, and examining neurostimulant effects on freshwater fish.

Geographic information systems

Learning how to utilize GIS is a powerful tool in my arsenal. I have mastered the basics of ArcGIS, ready to look at problems spatially. In this course, not only did we learn the foundational componenets of ArcGIS, but we used them to make a variety of maps. Geographic Information Systems has taught me how to spatially showcase environmentally-relevant data sets, plus a wide cariety of other data pieces.

proposal and grant writing

Working collaboratively in a team of five, I helped write a grant for a non-profit sustainably-minded organization in the downtown Ithaca area. Through tedious work, we crafted a proposal soliciting $30,000.

environmental health and medicine

This is the course that I discovered my passion for the field and became seriously interested in environmental health and toxicology. I learned how to conduct assays on fish protein complexes, and also gained knowledge about the interaction between chemicals and the human body (for better or for worse).
