Watch Frozen Online What’s at stake is what’s been at stake for the last decade’s worth of Disney animated features: An affirmation of whether or not Disney can play in the same box office playground as Pixar, Dreamworks, and upstarts like Illumination and Blue Sky. They’ve frankly struggled in the wake of Dreamworks’ global dominance and Pixar’s critical achievements, with pure Walt Disney DIS -0.65% Animation struggling to find its place in the sandbox that it created. Is Disney the classic western hero, the rugged pioneer who tamed the west but is now no longer fit to live in it?

But in terms of pure numbers, Disney is hoping for something along the lines of Wreck It Ralph, which earned a strong $471 million worldwide last November. That’s about the high average for Disney Animation films (Aladdin -$504m, Beauty and the Beast - $424m, Tarzan - $448m, etc.), although obviously many of their old-school classics were released either decades ago (inflation!) or during a period just before overseas box office skyrocketed. The plausible high-water mark is of course Tangled, which became the first non-Pixar Disney toon to cross $200m since The Lion King and grossed $591m worldwide, second only to the $987m-grossing Lion King.
Watch Frozen Online It is genuinely feminist in the best way: It is about women while also being about women while treating both things as utterly normal. It contains a princess heroine who is genuinely charming and openly funny and whose relative ability to take charge is never really called into question while refusing to treat any of this as remotely noteworthy. The genuine chemistry that Anna shares with every character, from her sister to her would-be suitors is infectious, and she may in fact be my favorite Disney princess ever. All of the major characters are genuinely charming and lively, from Anna’s two potential boyfriends to the comic relief talking snowman (spoiler – he’s not nearly as annoying as you feared and quite witty). There is a refreshing lack of overt villainy to the film as well, as Elsa is never truly painted as evil, rather someone choosing to hide from the world after she accidentally uses her frightening powers and does harm in a fit of not-unjustifiable anger.
Indeed, there’s not a lot wrong with Frozen: The animation is state-of-the-art, the action is imaginative and the visuals are stunning. But there’s one serious problem: It’s never very funny, nor is the music particularly memorable. With her secret laid bare for all to see, a devastated Elsa flees into the surrounding mountains, enveloping all of summertime Arendelle in a thick permafrost as she does. Anna gives chase, but proves ill equipped for the rugged and frigid terrain, eventually stumbling upon a small trading post that has wasted no time in jacking up prices on its minimal supply of off-season winter provisions.
