If you’re still waiting around for humans to create artificial intelligence, you may be surprised to learn that AI is already a reality and that it affects you practically on a daily basis. It’s true that artificial intelligence like you see in the movies or read about in science fiction novels (often referred to as artificial general intelligence, or AGI) doesn’t exist yet. That’s a level of artificial intelligence where computers can perform every mental task that a human can at a similar or even higher level. But artificial narrow intelligence (ANI), or weak AI, has been around for a while and it plays into your daily life more than you might realize. Here are just three ways.
Marketing personalization
Do you ever get the feeling that advertisers are eerily familiar with your interests, especially when they offer you a deal on a product you were already thinking about purchasing? Well it’s not a coincidence at all. Many retailers are harnessing the power of artificial intelligence to tell them how best to market to you. AI gives retailers to personalize the marketing experience to each individual customer. Gone are the days of mass mailers and spam email. AI systems are using your online shopping behavior to keep track of the types of things you’re interested and sending tailored marketing offers just for you.
Media recommendations
Do you find it curious how Netflix, Hulu, and other streaming services are always able to recommend the types of shows and movies you love? This is just another instance of AI systems being used to understand you. Streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, Spotify, and others use AI to pay attention to your media consumption behavior and customize recommendations for you so that you’ll keep watching or listening.
Online search queries
Nowhere is the use of AI more apparent than online search engines like Google. They’re getting better and better and predicting what you’re searching for before you can even finish typing your question. That’s because AI monitors how internet users behave after typing in a search query. If a person clicks on the first result and spends more than a few seconds on that site, the AI system knows that it’s providing the correct results for that search term.
