In the summer of 2011, Fredensborg Municipality created an open urban competition in two stages of urban development of Humlebaek South, which is a 58-acre scenic area in southwestern Humlebæk.
Purpose of the competition was to take on a vibrant neighborhood of high architectural quality with a focus on climate and sustainability, diversity and social contact. It is the municipality's desire that the area will contribute to the classification of future residential areas and the municipality therefore hopes that this urban development becomes an example project for sustainability and architectural quality.
The competition program was formulated as open questions, the Fredensborg Municipality wanted to leave it up to the participants to create the most compelling proposals for future sustainable city.
The proposals have been judged on the quality of solutions for urban planning, landscape or architecture.
