When young Lucian Miller visits the house of a friend it is everything he had long fantasized about; decay and grandeur, lofty rooms, dark red shadows and dust. The evening, however, is a disaster, and Lucian finds himself apparently alone with the sophisticated but troubled Miranda Honeyman. They shut all of the doors in an attempt to keep their problems out, but it soon becomes apparent that someone else may have access to the house. On the threshold of adulthood, in a heightening atmosphere of sexual uncertainty and violence, Lucian tries to make sense of what is happening around him. Bloody Baudelaire handles its themes deftly, with a rare insight into human character in extremis. An absolutely stunning new novella from an upcoming master of the fantastic!

In midwinter, an aspiring politician finds himself suddenly deprived of human contact. A group of newcomers to a town are strangely reminiscent of people lost in a recent flood. In a world where grief is forbidden, a young man builds a mound to commemorate his lover. An obsessive reader of Poe enters the world of his idol's stories. Demonstrators on a peace march see the faces of sleeping children in the snow. A failed musician meets his own ancestors getting off a midnight train.

Joel Lane's short stories combine the supernatural with themes of human loss, passion, solitude and despair. The complexity of the urban landscape provides a background to stories in which nothing can be relied upon. Ghosts and visions are an inevitable part of a reality where facts are uncertain, loyalties are divided, and the unknown is always close at hand. In Lane's fiction, the weird is a symbolic language that expresses the chilling beauty, sadness and mystery of real life.

From "The Brand" (written in 1983) to "Alouette" (written in 2008), these stories are selected from a quarter-century of writing. Twelve previously uncollected stories are reprinted from magazines and anthologies, bridging various strands of the weird fiction genre: urban horror tales, elegiac ghost stories, erotic reveries and psychological fugues. Two brief new tales offer different perspectives on the theme of mortality. Influences on these stories include Robert Aickman, John Metcalfe, Ramsey Campbell, M. John Harrison, Jean Genet, Sylvia Plath and Robert Smith.

The Terrible Changes is a journey through a shadow-realm between reality and dream, between clarity and madness, between the living and the dead. Enjoy.

Imagine if Herodotus had lived on through the centuries, collecting supernatural tales along his travels; or if a collection of scattered medieval fragments could be brought together and made to yield their secrets. Imagine, too, a storyteller who writes for the dead, crafting tributes to past masters from the depths of his nostalgia. Imagine, finally, a prose so pristine and economical that every tale is a universe, and you have, then, a true impression of George Berguno's The Exorcist's Travelogue.

The place is Larkhill House, and during its century and a half of existence it has been hosted an array of peculiar tenants: the reclusive though brilliant ornithologist Ellis Grimwood; a murderous wine merchant and his young wife; and the Sacred Order of the Mysteries of Thoth, who re-christened Larkhill the New Temple of Abititi and practised there their outlandish and mystical rites. After vacating Larkhill, these individuals left something of themselves behind. Set in the same haunted neighbourhood as the stories in the award-winning collection The Bleeding House, Old Albert continues with the idea that not all is well in the leafy Victorian suburb of Rathmines, Dublin.

In the afterglow of the Austria-Hungarian Empire, in a city at its furthest edge, a young scholar hopes to finish his study of the mascarons, the stone masks, carved on its grand buildings. His tired eyes seem to see features from his sketches in the faces of some of the passersby in this liminal place. In a story of transition and loss, we share in the strange visions and new tensions of a forgotten era. When an artistic Englishman receives an invitation to a private view at an atelier he does not know, on a card marked with a stark symbol, he decides he will investigate. What he finds introduces him to an art he had never imagined, and the experience of a lifetime. This enigmatic story is likely to resonate in the reader's mind. And in a walled garden on the Bosphorous, a League of Nations official meets a Frenchman who devotes his time to studies of all the sects of the old Ottoman Empire. Through the streets of Constantinople, he searches for evidence of their beliefs. At last, he introduces his acquaintance to those he has found the most elusive of all. A new collection from Mark Valentine is a always a good reason for celebration. Just think how lucky you are - the first person you come across with a Passport Levant in his pocket is also the only one who matters.

It is called the Cinnabar Book because that red is the colour of the garments of those who have reached the highest stage of perfection and stayed behind on earth for the salvation of mankind. Just as we cannot comprehend the meaning of a book if we just hold it in our hand or turn the pages without reading, so we will not profit from the course of our destiny if we do not grasp its meaning. Event follow each other like the pages of a book that are turned by Death; and all we know is that they appear and disappear, and that with the last one the book ends. We do not even know that it keeps being opened, again and again, until we finally learn to read. And as long as we cannot read, life is for us a worthless game in which joy and sorrow mingle.

John Howard's stellar debut collection eludes all sorts of categorizations. Here you will find the ghostly without the ghosts, the supernatural without that old rust, the traveller and the Exile, the deaths and the lives of foreign countries and the numinous in all its secret, hidden splendor. A bit like Herta Muller doing a Walter de la Mare impersonation, with H.G. Well, Olivia Manning and Julien Gracq standing by, waiting silently for the inhuman - or perhaps all too human - whispers of the silver voices.

This Hermetic Legislature is a tribute to Bruno Schulz. At the end of a curious parallel track of imagination the Twentieth Century is frozen by the memory of early spring snows, the lascivious gaze of tradesmen, dark July nights and the chatter of exotic birds. Every face in the crowd is as still as a travelling waxwork exhibit. It is an Age of Genius writ in crumbling ledgers and announced in the margins of charlatan's advertisments. Everywhere the agony and ecstasy of its times may be read. Upon every mouldering wall there is a rich mural of creation and beneath every glittering plastic jewel of technology hides an ancient fermentation.

A highly deluxe collection of exclusive stories by Mark Valentine, John Howard, Jonathan Wood, Colin Insole, Dan Watt, Joel Lane, Rhys Hughes, George Berguno, Reggie Oliver, Michael Cisco and many others.

Collects ten stories: 336 pages. Karakasa is an Orientalist masquarade of decayed futurity. The Were-Sheep of Abercrave offers a shaggy-dog tale of such shagginess that its coat has been shaped into a bizzare topiary maze. Asking for It skteches a picture of sad singledom amongst the rootless of Tokyo. The Fox Wedding brings Far Eastern folklore to a modern setting, with some unpleasant surprises. Italiannetto is a sunny, nostalgic love story with Neopolitan style. In Trouble Joe, a ghost tethered to this world by chains of resentment searches for someone to hear his story. Mise an Abyme presents an escheresque trompe-l'aeil in prose, while in the stunning novella Ynys-y-Plag you will discover a weird tale in the tradition of Blackwood and Machen. In these stories, Crisp
draws equally from East and West to create a vision of the macabre like nothing else in literature. Discover here fleurs du mal of hybrid decadence, whimsy, exoticism, gothickry, horror and beauty.

It is no sign of benediction to have been obsessed with the lives of saints.

E.M. Cioran

The melancholy spirit of Emil Cioran pervades this allegorical diptych of sacred and profane revelations. While visiting the hallowed Shrine of Saint Margite Level in Burgundy, a wayward English tourist falls inexorably under the spell of her ecstatic visions and resolves to change his dissolute and secular ways. After beholding Margite's incorrupt remains, miraculously preserved, the reformed aesthete turns hagiographer, making his scholarly pilgrimage without suspecting that it is no more than a promenade and that everything in this world disappoints, even sanctity. Is there any other criterion for art besides closeness to heaven? Intensity and passion can be measured only in relation to the Absolute.

O Altitudo offers the reader four encounters with the strange, the wondrous, and the uncanny: an urban explorer peregrinates the psychotopography of Copenhagen; a failed seeker of mysteries comes upon spots of evil which open new vistas of reality; in the spring on 1938

an old Austrian refugee from the horrors in utero arrives in Denmark, carrying the blazing light of the past; and the final story explores the idea, expressed by the Reverend Montague Summers, that evil may attach itself to possessions.

All of the characters in George Berguno's first collection of stories are spiritual sons and daughters of Ishmael. They are strangers and outcasts; beguiled and despised by a world that had once been their home. The stories vary greatly in their settings. From pre-Viking Norway to nineteenth century Chile; from the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire to Hitler's Germany; from a timeless town in the New World to contemporary Britan - these stories are remarkable for their unpredictable use of the strange and their subtle exploration of the fantastic. A rare book, much sought after by those who collect exotic literature.

Translation, preface and notes by Antonio Monteiro.

Together with "La Ruelle Tenebreuse" of Jean Ray, "Le Bahut Noir" (The Black Cupboard) represent some of the most astonishing specimen of French supernaturalism. It is an urban story which has the old streets and alleys of Paris as background. It is mainly a tale of Man's fight against his fate of his powerlessness to overthrow it. But it is also a decadent Faustian story, with a powerful erotic drive. A minor masterpiece of French fantastic.

It is 1952. At the Retreat in Wilflingen, bequeathed centuries ago by the Von Staunffenberg Knights, the residents, drawn inevitably and mysteriously to its shelter, hold their secrets and shame. Amongst them is the Englishman who plundered and beggared a family during the Austrian inflation: the German, whose loss of courage caused the 1944 July plot to fail and the student who betrayed the White Rose Movement.

Oblivion's Poppy is the debut volume of Colin Insole. And also one of the few true masterpieces of the contemporary fantastic literature.

It is the late 1980's. Two young people are drawn together at a London registry office, where the walls are hungs with the prints and animal paintings of Albrecht Durer. Vlastimil Lednacek comes to erase all association with his dying father's nostalgia for the Prague he knew by assuming an English name. Alice, remembering nothing of her parents and brought up by the

kindly Exiles of St John, seeks in vain for her past.

Once again,Colin Insole proves he is one of the veritable new masters of the most literate form of the fantastic literature. Alcyone is a triumph, nothing less.

A small, intimate box, signed by the author; six fold-out booklets; eleven pieces of immaculate prose-poetry paying homage to several forgotten Romanian poets of the absurd, of the ineffable, of the numinous heart of Mystery.

The poets celebrated herein are true saints and heretics of a Gnostic tradition unknown even to those who maintain it. They direct the courses of hidden streams which run deep beneath the surface of the earth and which determine the measures and proportions of forbidden architectures, abandoned topographies, and impossible geometries. Gellu Naum, Max Blecher, Urmuz, Emil Botta, Benjaime Fondane, Gherasim Luca, Nora Iuga, Thessar Ether and a handful of others  are evoked to visible appearence on folded paper in such a way as to provide a sort of oracle.

And what an oracle it is!

They direct the courses of hidden streams which run deep beneath the surface of the earth and which determine the measures and proportions of forbidden architectures, abandoned topographies, and impossible geometries. Gellu Naum, Max Blecher, Urmuz, Emil Botta, Benjamin Fondane, Mehmet Niyazi, and a handful of others are evoked to visible appearance on folded paper in such a way as to provide a sort of oracle. FIRST EDITION

This was heartbreakingly, hauntingly beautiful and poignant, a feast for the spirit and the sould. I shall have to revisit these pages again in the future, for I feel there are many layers hidden in this deceptively simple novella. I am so full of emotion upon reading the last of these words that I can barely breathe. (Alexandra Dimou)

Two of the most beautiful books (profusely illustrated too!) I have published but also two of the most important works to appear in our literature.

The Infra Noir volume has been named so after the Exhibition of the Surrealists Gellu Naum, Paul Paun and Dolfi Trost, which took place in Bucharest, in 1946.

The name also appeared a few years earlier in the story The Seven Treasures of Bucharest, written by Mark Valentine and Geticus Polus (collected in The Nightfarers). Dada Gnosis itself is a homage to the original Infra Noir group.

It is also worth mentioning that Infra Noir was the original name for my press, before it eventually became Ex Occidente Press.

The Infra Noir volume contains exclusive works by Mark Valentine, Colin Insole, Thomas Stromsholt, Damian Murphy, John Howard and D.P. Watt.

The entire volume (themes, name, layout, presentation, etc) has been edited and designed by Dan Ghetu.

You are on a train, you draw the book from your haversack.

The boy with green laces ask what it is.

It is called At Dusk, you say.

He nods.

Yes, I see.

At dusk, things change...

One of the best volumes I have published and one of the very best Mark Valentine's collections.
