Dreaming with open eyes...

Hey there book lovers!! As some of you probably know, I had a book slump for almost three weeks, I tried to escape it but I. just. couldn’t. do. it. I wanted to read but I didn’t WANT to read, if that makes any sense at all… I mean, I wanted to make myself read but I just didn’t feel like reading.

Wondering how this happened? I think it’s time for a little story telling moment…

It all started when I finished reading a book and there were like four days left for the release day of Glass Sword by Victoria Aveyard and I didn’t want to start a new book that could take five days to read because if that happened, I’d have to wait one more day to read Glass Sword… and you know… I am a very impatient person…  So I said okay, I will not read any book until Glass Sword comes out, I can do this. BUT as soon as hours started to go by, I realized HOW DEPENDENT I AM FROM BOOKS. I can’t spend one miserable hour without reading! How crazy is this? VERY. I mean, I DEPEND ON WORDS PRINTED ON PAPER.

Okay so… I committed the grave mistake of opening Netflix… and I was just going to watch a movie… and then I saw the Grey’s Anatomy picture there… and I told myself “Sunshine, you have watched the first six seasons and stopped watching this show because it made you cry a lot, you should not keep watching it.” Soo…  I OBVIOUSLY CLICKED ON THE “Play” BUTTON.

WELCOME TO THE BOOK SLUMP YOU WILL NEVER ESCAPE.

Days went by and Glass Sword came out. AND I JUST KEPT ON WATCHING GREY’S ANATOMY BECAUSE DRAMATIC THINGS WERE HAPPENING AND MY HEART COULDN’T STOP WRENCHING. (By the way, have you watched Grey’s Anatomy?! It is soo good… and soooooo sad!)

I couldn’t stop watching Netflix. At first it was okay… but the problem was when realization and guilt started to kick in… I said “okay, just one more episode…” AND WE ALL KNOW THAT IS A LIE. IT WAS NOT ONE EPISODE, IT WAS THE WHOLE SEASON… AND THE FOLLOWING SEASON… AND THE FOLLOWING SEASON… AND I JUST COULD NOT STOP. I knew I had to read, but why would I when I had such an amazing TV show going on in front of my face?

I know how hard it is to escape a book slump, so today I want to share some tips to help you get out of it and I will tell you what I did to get out of this horrible Netflix-induced book slump…

1. You just finish the most wonderful story EVER? You don’t know what to do with your life now? No book will ever be as good as that one? JUST open a book and start reading. I know, it’s not easy. Force yourself to read. And keep reading. Don’t stop. You can do it. You got this.

2. Read a short book. Don’t try to escape a book slump reading a gigantic monster book, we all know you will never finish the book and you will never get out of the book slump!

3. Read a fast-paced book. The kind of book you just can’t put down, no matter how tired or hungry or busy you are. Read The Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins or Divergent by Veronica Roth. You can also try reading a good romance novel! It works!

4. If you are having a hard time focusing and liking the story, read positive reviews about that book. This will motivate you to keep reading, you don’t want to miss that mind-blowing plot twist right?

5. Find a reading buddy.  Give your bookish friend a call and ask them if they want to read a book together (not necessarily together in the same place, just at the same time) If your friend is a faster reader than you, you will want to read more to catch up with them and beat them! We are all competitive when it comes to finishing a book in time… And if you are the faster reader, you will want to finish the book super quickly to show off… Yep, we are also a little bit too proud of ourselves…

6. If you are having a Netflix-induced book slump just like I did, force yourself to not open Netflix for some days and open a book you’ve been wanting to read for a long time.

Number 6 is exactly what I did, it was hard, I felt lost without Meredith Grey by my side… but eventually I sadly forgot about her… I’m sorry Mer, I still love you but watching your life ruins mine…

Anyway, at first I felt lost and I still didn’t want to read… so I had nothing to do in my spare time…

and guess what? I DISCOVERED I HAD A SECRET TALENT, AN AMAZING SUPER POWER… Unfortunately, it was not moving things with my mind, or flying, or being able to see what other people were thinking… but I discovered I COULD COOK. REALLY, I MADE SOME AWESOME CAKES AND COKIES.

So, I still didn’t read… this brings us to number 7 (which I also did, and it worked perfectly)

7. Get inspired! Visit readers blogs or watch book videos on YouTube, you will see how happy they look reading, and how fantastic their bookshelves look with so many books on them… don’t you want to read and be just as happy as them? YOU DO. SO GET OUT OF YOUR BED. NO NO, DON’T CRAWL. WALK LIKE A NORMAL PERSON WOULD. STOP CRYING. GRAB A BOOK. READ IT. AND BE HAPPY.

Getting out of book slumps is REALLY hard, but you can do it! You just need to grab a book and read it, you will immediately start liking the story and you will want to read more and more!! I wish you good luck! Tell me if you need any book recommendations to help you, you know I love you book lover! And you know I love hearing from you! Send me an E-mail and tell me something, even if it’s just a simple “Hi” it makes my day knowing that people out there find my posts useful… XOXO See you next Friday!
