The concept of Hyper-Morphology (self-coined term), which, outlines a bio-inspired evolutionary design process with a primary focus on cellular differentiation, adaptation and self-organisation via collective decision-making of autonomous agents is adopted for the workshop. Each group of students was given a task to combine an architectural elemental (for instance a wall, floor, ceiling etc) with a furniture element using a transformation sequence (via code). In the process principles of kinetics, mechanics and sensing, actuation and control protocols were explored. Human machine interaction thus bind together in an interplay of multiple affordances: hence the title Multi-modal environments. Architectural robotics, human psychology and real-time communication of information find their fusion in the developed projects.

-   IPE   >>   INTER-PERFORMING   ENVIRONMENTS 

The Inter-performing environments workshop involved shifting focus from utilitarian aspects of space to expressive qualitative explorations of space. This involved a combination of architectural robotics and new media in order to develop real-time interactive systems (ambient as well as physical). A combination of user interaction scenarios including intimacy, affection, safety and group formation are experimented with. Interaction modes for clustering people as groups as well as for encouraging one to one conversation via the modes of sound and tactility of surfaces is thus extensively explored in the workshop. The students are further encouraged to use their bodies (via body tracking) to trigger scripting routines and initiate kinetic and ambient behaviour. A successful fusion of bodily movement and new media based tools and techniques is thus achieved via this workshop.
