Place this bracket on the sill of the window and screw it there in preparation for the unit. Open up the window and put the unit over the sill so that it rests on the bracket. Pull the window down so that it sits flush against the top of the unit.

There should be some extensions on both sides of the unit. Pull these out until they are straight up against the sides of the window. With a power drill, make small holes into the window frame and then use these holes and some screws to secure the extensions to the wall. Many people skip every step following the one where the window comes down. They simply trust the window itself to hold the unit in place. This can be a costly mistake. Take the time to secure the unit in completely and you can be sure that your unit isn't going to fall out accidentally and break or cause injury to someone walking by.

Naturally, a window unit is simply not going to be enough for some people. If you live in a larger house, you'll have to buy several units or upgrade to a central system.
